Leatherneck Magazine
The July issues of Leatherneck and Marine Corps Gazette spotlight the pivotal decades of World War II and the Korean War as part of the Road to the Marine Corps’ 250th Birthday.
Leatherneck features a powerful, long-lost photo of 1st Marine Division Marines on Okinawa, fulfilling PFC Norris McElroy’s 1945 wish that the image be published, alongside moving tributes like “1/27 on Iwo” by John A. Butler III and a detailed account of Operation Chromite.
Gazette echoes this theme with historically rich content such as firsthand reflections from Iwo Jima and Okinawa, a sobering look at wartime dehumanization, and contemporary discussions on leadership and ethics—including the effects of civilian drug laws on military discipline.
Together, both publications honor the legacy of Marines who shaped these wars while also offering thoughtful insights for today’s Corps.
